Grey and Smoke Tinted Mirror — What Changes When You Order at Scale
Tint comes from the glass, not from a film. That single fact decides how you should order it and what can go wrong on a reorder.
Short answer: the tint in a grey, bronze or smoke mirror comes from the glass substrate itself, not from a film or a coating applied afterwards. That makes tint a batch property: two orders placed months apart can differ slightly, and the difference shows when panels sit side by side. Order tinted panels for one installation from one batch, and say so on the purchase order.
Where the colour comes from
A tinted mirror starts as body-tinted float glass — the colourant is in the melt, distributed through the thickness. The mirror is then silvered on the back as usual. Looking at the mirror, you are seeing light pass through the tinted glass twice, which is why the effect deepens with thickness.
Two consequences follow, and both matter commercially:
- Thickness changes the colour. A 4 mm and a 5 mm panel from the same melt do not look identical. Fix the thickness in the specification, not just the tint name.
- Melts vary. Body tint is controlled to a tolerance, not to an exact value. Different melts land in slightly different places within that tolerance.

The last row is worth planning for at order stage rather than at breakage stage. On a tinted installation, a spare panel bought with the original order is a genuinely different product from a spare panel bought a year later.
The tints in practice
Smoke grey is the neutral one. It darkens the reflection without shifting its colour, which is why it sits well against both warm and cool interiors. The round smoke grey tinted mirror is the volume item in this group.

Where tinted mirror is the wrong answer
Tinted glass reduces the light coming back. In a bathroom where the mirror is the working surface for grooming, that is a functional loss, and the usual outcome is a client who asks why the room feels dark six months later. Tinted panels belong on feature walls, behind furniture, in corridors and in bars — places where the mirror is doing decorative work rather than task work.
If the room needs both, the workable answer is a clear task mirror at the vanity and tinted panels elsewhere, not a tinted mirror asked to do both jobs.
Safety backing and tint are independent
A tinted panel can carry CAT I or CAT II backing exactly like a clear one; the tint does not affect the backing class and the backing does not affect the tint. Where a tinted panel goes into a public area, specify the class separately — it will not come by default.
