Illuminated, LED or Backlit Mirror — Three Names, Three Different Things
Illuminated" is common in the UK, "LED" in the US, and "backlit" means something specific. Mixing them up costs a sample round.
Short answer: "illuminated" and "LED" are general terms for a mirror with a light in it — the first more common in the UK, the second in the US. "Backlit" is specific: the light sits behind the glass and washes the wall, producing a halo. "Front-lit" is its counterpart, with the light facing out at the user. Two of these three words describe a marketing category; one describes where the light physically is.
The three terms

Writing "LED mirror" on a purchase order narrows nothing about the lighting effect. Writing "backlit" or "front-lit" does.
Backlit and front-lit do different jobs
Backlit produces a halo around the mirror. It is atmospheric, it makes the mirror appear to float, and it lights the wall rather than the face. In a bathroom it is a mood light that happens to be attached to a mirror.
Front-lit puts light on the person. That is what you want for grooming, shaving and makeup, and it is the reason a hotel bathroom specification usually calls for front-lit or dual-lit rather than backlit alone.
Dual-lit does both, which is why it appears in hospitality work where the same mirror has to serve a functional morning and a soft evening.
The mistake worth avoiding: specifying backlit for a room whose only mirror light is that mirror. It looks good in the render and then nobody can see their face.
Colour temperature
Where the mirror is the task light, colour temperature matters as much as placement. Three-colour-temperature switching lets the same fitting run cool for grooming and warm for a relaxed setting, which is why it turns up in hotel and residential specifications.

What to write on the specification
Four lines are usually enough to avoid a sample round:
- Light position: backlit, front-lit or dual-lit
- Colour temperature, or 3-CCT switching
- Anti-fog: required or not
- Switch type: touch, sensor or wall switch
The last one is worth stating because it changes the wiring. A touch switch on the mirror and a wall switch outside the room are different installations, and the decision usually belongs to whoever is doing the electrical work.
